Fyodor Petrovich Tolstoy

Count Fyodor Petrovich Tolstoy (Russian Фёдор Петрович Толстой; * 10 Februarjul / February 21 1783greg in Saint Petersburg, .. .. † 13 Apriljul / April 25 1873greg ) was a famous Russian painter and sculptor of the 19th century.

He graduated in 1802 a military school of the Imperial Russian Navy in Saint Petersburg. At this time he became increasingly interested in art and was a guest student at the State Art Academy. In 1804 he left the army and devoted himself since the painting. Especially was actively involved with Tolstoy in non-traditional areas, so he created reliefs of wax, smaller portraits and medals. In 1810 he obtained a permanent position at the St. Petersburg Mint, where he created medals with motifs of the Patriotic War of 1812 among others.

In 1828 he became vice-president of the Academy of Arts, 14 years later, Professor. As a sculptor he worked with, among others, in Moscow at the architectural design of the Christ the Savior Cathedral.

Fyodor Petrovich Tolstoy was a cousin of the scandalous officer and adventurer Fyodor Ivanovich Tolstoy.
