Gabriel Grovlez

Gabriel Grovlez ( born April 4, 1879 in Lille, † October 20th 1944 in Paris) was a French conductor and composer.

Life and work

Gabriel Grovlez studied at the Paris Conservatoire at Albert Lavignac, André Gédalge and Fauré. He taught for 10 years piano at the Paris Schola Cantorum. In addition, he was from 1905 to 1908 at the Opéra -Comique choral conductor and assistant conductor. From 1911 to 1913 he was musical director of the performances of Jacques Rouché on Thêatre des Arts. From 1914 to 1933 he was director of the Opéra. In spite of this office he found time conducting engagements in Monte Carlo, Cairo, Lisbon and New York to take over. He was also 1916-1917 and 1937-1939 worked as a music critic. From 1939 until his death he conducted a chamber music class at the Paris Conservatoire.

Its importance as a conductor on the one hand in world premieres of works by contemporary composers, including Fauré's Dolly, Albert Roussel's Le Festin de l' Araignée and Maurice Ravel's Ma Mère l' Oye. In the field of early music he conducted operas by Jean -Baptiste Lully, Monteverdi, Gluck and Jean -Philippe Rameau again. As a composer he is forgotten today in spite of numerous works.
