Gabriel Monod

Gabriel Monod ( born March 7, 1844 in Ingouville, Seine- Maritime, † April 10, 1912 in Versailles) was a French historian and medievalist.

He was the nephew of Adolphe Monod and had Alsatian about his mother ancestors. He went to Le Havre and Paris to school and studied at the Ecole Normale Superieure with the completion in 1865 and then in Göttingen and Berlin with Georg Waitz. After his return in 1868 he taught at the École pratique des hautes études history. In the German -Prussian War 1870/71 he organized with his cousins ​​an ambulance that followed the front line. He later wrote memoirs about the war ( Allemands et Francais, 1871). He then taught at the Ecole pratique again ( until 1905 ) and also at the Ecole Normale Superieure ( 1880-1904 ).

He dealt with medieval history and gave here the Chronicles of Gregory of Tours, Marius of Avenches and Fredegar out.

In 1875 he founded with Gustave Fagniez the Revue historique.

In 1873 he married Olga heart, daughter of Alexander Herzen.
