Jules Michelet

Jules Michelet ( born August 21, 1798 in Paris, † February 9, 1874 in Hyeres, France) was a French historian of the 19th century.

Life

After teaching at the Collège Rollin (Paris, 1821) and at the Ecole Normale Supérieure (1830 ), he was section chief at the National Archives. Michelet was an advocate of democracy, patriotic or nationalistic -minded and equally fierce opponents of the clerical. In his works he interpreted the history of France in this sense: the main actor is the people (le peuple ), the goal is the creation of a French nation ( la nation ). Among the most glorified events in his monumental Histoire de France ( 1833) include the appearance of Joan of Arc and the French Revolution. Due to the universal achievements of the revolution that had brought the whole of humanity benefit, France, according to Michelet deserves a special place among the nations. He was the father of the republican- national ( " Jacobin " ) historiography, which was mainly the time of the Third Republic influential.

In 1838 he became a member of the Académie des sciences morales et politiques, and professor of history at the Collège de France. After a bitter dispute which convinced Republicans lost in 1851 under Emperor Napoleon III. his teaching task and the archivist place.
