Gabriel Prosser

Gabriel Prosser (* October 10, 1776 () in Henrico County, Virginia;? † October 7, 1800 ) was an enslaved blacksmith from Richmond, who together with his brother Martin Prosser led a failed slave rebellion in Virginia in 1800.

Life

Gabriel Prosser organized a slave revolt with about a hundred other slaves. Together they wanted to take on 30 August 1800 Richmond and distribute its Mayor James Monroe. However, the plan was unveiled and failed. Gabriel, who bore the surname of its owner, Thomas H. Prosser, his arrest was initially missed, but was in October 1800, as 35 of his followers hanged.

Memory

  • In 2002, the city of Richmond recalled the 202ten anniversary of the rebellion and called Prosser in a resolution a patriot and freedom fighter.
  • In autumn 2006 the NAACP asked the governor Tim Kaine Gabriel and his followers posthumous pardon.
  • August 30, 2007 Kaine with this request and pardoned Gabriel and his followers
