Devil's Petrel ( Pterodroma hasitata )

Hook shearwater ( Pterodroma ) are a species of bird from the family of petrels ( Procellariidae ).

The hooks shearwaters are deep sea birds that are common to all the oceans. In addition to the hook-shaped at the tip of beak they are characterized by long wings and a short tail. Outside the breeding season they spend their whole life on the high seas and are able to adapt to even the most difficult weather conditions. Their diet is small fish and marine invertebrates, which they capture just below the sea surface. Hook shearwaters are a maximum of 85 inches long.

The Bermuda Petrel ( Pterodroma cahow ), which belongs to the hook shearwaters, is probably one of the rarest seabirds in the world. The species was almost exterminated in the 17th century because it was captured in their area of ​​distribution around Bermuda by introduced mammals. Due to protection measures, the stocks have now recovered somewhat. However, the Bermuda Petrel is not the only species of this genus, which is endangered. The IUCN classifies also the Phoenix Petrel as endangered ( endangered ) and estimates the backlog at 30,000 mature individuals.

The St. Helena Giant Petrel ( Pterodroma rupinarum ) is known only from subfossilem bone material from the island of St. Helena. The species died during the early colonization of St. Helena from the 16th century.
