Gaetano Filangieri

His father Cesar, Prince of Arianiello saw him for a military career, which he also began at the age of seven years, but soon dropped out to become a lawyer. As a lawyer, his knowledge and his eloquence brought him quick success. His support of a royal decree to reform the corrupt judicial system won him the favor of the King, Ferdinand IV, and his Prime Minister Bernardo Tanucci, and led to several honorable appointments in court.

The first books of his great work, La Scienza della Legislazione ( The science of legislation), appeared in 1780. The first volume dealt with the rules of law in general and the abolition of the medieval institutions which hindered the production and prosperity, while the second the questions of the economy devoted. These two books show him as a fiery reformer and convinced opponent of the abuses of his time. He insisted on unlimited free trade and the abolition of the medieval organizational structures. He had not only in Italy immediate success, but also throughout the rest of Europe.

In 1783 he married, resigned from his offices, retired to Cava to devote himself to the completion of his work. In the same year appeared to be completely dedicated to the Kriminaljuristikatur third book. The proposals he made in this work, such as the need for reform in the Catholic Church, censorship brought him by the ecclesiastical authorities. His book was in 1784 placed on the Index of Forbidden Books.

In 1785 he published his three-volume work on the fourth issues of training and morale.

In 1787 he was appointed the Fourth to the top Schatzrat by Ferdinand, but his failing due to overwork in the new office and his studies health forced him to retreat to the country in Vico Equense. He died on July 21, 1788 something suddenly from tuberculosis when he was just completed it the first part of his fifth book. He left sketches for the rest of his work on a sixth book.

According to the Gaetano Filangieri Philosophical Society, Benjamin Franklin has been a passionate supporter Filangieris, the two corresponded from 1780 until the death Filangieris 1788.

Even Johann Wolfgang Goethe expresses in his book " Italian Journey " respectfully about a meeting with Filangieri. Citations in Google Books
