The Gailach is a right tributary of the Altmühltherme in the Upper Bavarian district of Eichstätt.

Course

Upper Gailach

The river, also called Mörnsheimer Bach, actually originates in the village pond of Kreut, a district of Monheim. Two kilometers below Warching trickles the stream at a retention basin in sinkholes Monheim Alb. In the summer there trickles the Gailach completely underground, but in winter the drain is so high that the stream can flow through the lower, normally dry valley to Mülheim.

Gailachquelle

The water seeped into the upper Gailach occurs after about four kilometers underground run from the Gailachquelle behind the sponge - mill in Mülheim back to the surface. Detection was by dyeing tests. In three effluents from crevices on dolomite slopes crack initiation to a length of six meters in the water of the Gailach flows. It is amazing that there is about ten times as much water comes to light than Warching seeps. The source situation has a bed of 600 to 700 liters per second, and the stream is now several meters wide. The source is one of the strongest in Bavaria.

The source is identified by the Bavarian State Office for Environment as Geotop 176Q009. See also the list of geological sites in the district of Eichstätt.

Lower Gailach

Shortly before Moernsheim, opposite the Finster mill Gailach receives additional water by seven closely spaced sources; the place is therefore called " Seven little spring ". In Altendorf the river empties into the Altmühltherme.

Inflows

In winter ends in the otherwise arid valley Ehbrust from the left, while in summer they will never reach the Gailach.
