Gaius Norbanus

Gaius Norbanus ( the cognomen Balbus is very uncertain; † 82/81 BC in Rhodes ) was a Roman politician of the late Republic.

Norbanus came from Norba and stepped up to be the first of his family (homo novus ), the official career ( cursus honorum ). Norbanus is counted among the Populares and was a supporter of Lucius Saturninus Appuleius. 103 BC he complained as tribune Quintus Servilius Caepio successful due to the defeat against the Cimbri at Arausio to. Probably 101 BC ( in a reversal of the usual order ) he was under Marcus Antonius quaestor in Cilicia. 94 BC Antony defended him against an accusation of maiestas violation in the indictment Caepio. In this process Norbanus was acquitted. As praetor during the Social War, and then (probably 89 BC and as propraetor the following year or the following years ) Norbanus was governor of Sicily.

As consul 83 BC, he joined the landed in Italy against Sulla, but was defeated at the mountain Tifata and retired to Capua, where he could keep for a while. As a proconsul in the following year Norbanus suffered at Faventia in Northern Italy a defeat against Sulla subfield Quintus Caecilius Metellus Pius. His legacy Albinovanus ran it over to Metellus. Norbanus escaped and came to Rhodes, where he served as Proskribierter took his own life.
