Galerie des Batailles

The Battle Gallery ( french gallery of batailles ) is the Palace of Versailles, a large hall in the south wing, the so-called Prince wings. It is located on the first floor of the castle park side and extends with its central glass roof in the shape of a barrel vault up into the attic floor. Above the fighter round windows are installed on both sides of the wall. King Louis Philippe concern was the honor of the great military victories of France. Four chambers of the royal family had to make way for this conversion.

The hall is two stories high, 120 meters long and 13 meters wide and contains 33 large-scale wall paintings, and 82 busts of famous military leader. The painting stage about 14 centuries of French history. In particular, victorious kings and famous generals are seen on the battlefields. The period shown in the pictures starts with 496 Clovis I in the painting Battle of Zuelpich by Ary Scheffer and extends to the Battle of Wagram in 1809 under Napoleon.

The gallery is preceded by the so-called Prince staircase that leads to the Prince's Court and has direct access to the hall in 1792. This hall is named after him ornamental paintings. At the back of the battle Gallery is the Stone Gallery.

The opening of the hall on June 10, 1837 coincided with the museum opening of the Musée de Versailles.
