Galopin

Galopin (* 1872, † June 3, 1899 ) was a successful racing and breeding horse.

Life

Galopin was bred in Lincolnshire by William Tayler Sharpe. He was a full brother of 1865 drawn mare Vex. The brown one with the little white star and a subsequent shoulder height of 15 hands and 3 1/ 2 inches was sold in 1873 at a price of 520 guineas on the Middle Park Yearling Sale at the Hungarian prince Gusztáv Batthyány.

At the age of two to three years, he was trained as a racehorse and began a successful racing career; among other things, he triumphed at the 1874 Derby Stakes. On April 29, 1874 it was the victory in his first race after the disqualification of Cachmere at the Hyde Park Stakes at Epsom awarded; In the same year he won the Fernhill Stakes at Ascot with a lead of five lengths horses. In Newmarket, he was after a collision in October 1874 at the Middle Park Plate third behind Plebeian and Per Se. A day later, he won in the Sweepstakes by a margin of two horse lengths. In total he won in this race season five of six races in which he had set out.

In 1875, he won the Newmarket Second in the spring, at the Derby Stakes at Epsom in May, at the Fern Hill Stakes at Ascot in June and at the Newmarket Second October and the Newmarket Derby. With that he went from all five races he ran this season, as the winner.

Although he was in good shape, he ran as a four year old no more races. The blame for this health problems of its owner or the concern about overtaxing the best horse in the stable. He was therefore used in William Barrows as a breeding stallion, first without particular success.

After the death of the Prince in the spring of 1883 - Batthyány suffered a heart attack while he pursued a race of galopin - son Galliard, - the horse went at a price of 8000 guineas into the possession of Henry Chaplin. As a breeding stallion galopin stood in the stable of Blankney Hall in Sleaford in Lincolnshire. It was in 1888, 1889 and 1898 awarded " Champion Sire ." Galopin was the father of many successful racing and breeding horses, among which were the mares Aida (* 1898), Angelica (* 1879), Atalanta ( b. 1878 ), Bonnie Gal ( * 1889), Corrie Roy ( b. 1878 ), Galeottia (* 1892), Galicia ( * 1898), galopin Mare ( * 1887), Satchel (* 1882) and vampires (* 1889).
