Galton Bridge

The Galton Bridge is a cast iron arch bridge in Smethwick in the Metropolitan Borough of Sandwell (West Midlands ). At its dedication in 1829 it was 45 meters ( 151 feet) span the longest single arch iron bridge construction in the world.

The construction of the bridge was necessary, as the Birmingham Canal is new and it cut some roads. On it Roebuck Lane was out on the grounds incision, which was necessary for the channel. Your designer was Thomas Telford, who fell back for their construction to a few years previously executed by him plan the Brige Holt, also a cast-iron river crossing. The plans were executed by the company Horsley Ironworks. The bridge was named after Samuel Tertius Galton (son of Samuel John Galton ), who was member of the building and construction Smethwicks then strongly supported.

The Galton Bridge is a historical monument since 1972 and is now released only as a pedestrian bridge.
