They dominated the region politically and with the ruling national coalition of Ethiopian People Revolutionary Democratic Front ( EPRDF ), an alliance.

The GPD (U) M is in its present form since 2003. Earlier regional allies of the EPRDF were the Gambella People's Liberation Movement ( GPLM ) 1991-1998 and the Gambella People's Democratic Front ( GPdf ) 1998-2003.

History

Precursor

In 1979 educated members of the ethnic group of the Anuak in Gambella, western Ethiopia, the People's Liberation Movement ( GPLM ). This began a guerrilla war against the communist Derg regime of Mengistu Haile Mariam. She does, however, failed to mobilize large sections of the population, or to keep " liberated areas " under their control. They therefore turned to the Oromo Liberation Front, but what the GPLM would only grant support, if they recognized the Anuak as "black Oromo ".

In the 1980s, the GPLM approached instead of the Tigray People's Liberation Front ( TPLF ), which increasingly turned out to be the strongest resistance movement. THe GPLM gave up their demand for independence and now pursued the goal of autonomy within Ethiopia, thereby complying with the program of the TPLF. When the TPLF in 1989, the EPRDF coalition formed with other organizations that GPLM was not included as a full member, allied himself but with this coalition.

When the EPRDF in 1990/91 pushed forward to the south, the Derg regime left the area of Gambela, and the EPRDF occupied this along with a small contingent of GPLM. They deposed the regional leadership of members of the Nuer, who had come to terms with the Derg regime and beglich old bills with this other major ethnic group of Gambela. The Nuer then founded the Gambella People's Democratic Unity Party ( GPDUP ), which was recognized by the EPRDF and later the GPLM equal.

Founding of the party

The GPLM was weakened by internal disputes, mainly between Anuak from villages on the river Baro or Upeno, which are known as Upeno boys, and Anuak from villages at Gilo. Before the parliamentary elections of 1995 some members of the group were Upeno, including the Regional President Okello -sized windows, imprisoned and expelled from the party, bringing the Gilo Group gained the upper hand within the GPLM.

1998 ordered the EPRDF to the merger of the GPLM and the Nuer - party GPDUP the Gambella People's Democratic Front ( GPdf ). Dissatisfied Anuak then founded the Gambella People's Democratic Congress. When this opposition party ahead of the 2000 elections, gaining strength, several of its leaders were arrested.

2003 forced the central government, the dissolution of the GPdf and replaced it with the GPDM as a coalition of three newly established ethnically defined parties. These three parties were the Nuer People's Democratic Organization, in which the Nuer and the Opo were merged, the Anyua People's Democratic Organization as a combination lock of the Anuak and Komo and Majanger People's Democratic Organization for Majangir.

Election results

In the parliamentary elections in Ethiopia in 2005, the party won all three seats from Gambela in the national parliament (People's House of Representatives ). In regional elections in 2005 she received 81 of the 82 seats in the regional parliament. The Vice - Chairman of the Committee for Social Affairs in the Federal Council of Ethiopia belongs to the GPDM.

In 2010 Umod Ubong is chairman of the GPDM or GPUDM and head of government of Gambela.
