Gambia National Museum

The National Museum ( German National Museum ) of the West African country Gambia lies on the Independence Drive (on some maps, the road is as Gloucester Street or Tafsir Demba Ndow Street named) in the capital Banjul.

Description

For the historically interested visitors, it shows some interesting exhibits. Many of these pieces are shown in conjunction with personalities from the checkered history of the Gambia. The museum is open from Monday to Saturday, and it has shortened on Friday and Saturday opening times.

History

The museum is housed in a building that was once used as parliament building, the British Council and the National Library as well as the Bathurst Club. The museum was opened by the then President Dawda Jawara on February 18, 1985, the 20th anniversary of the independence of the Gambia.

2013, the more than 100 year old building was subjected to a two-week renovation. The funds were donated by the Trust Bank Gambia Limited.
