Gambian hip hop

Gambian hip- hop is a genre of music that was developed in the 1970s by African- Americans in New York. In Senegal, Gambia's neighboring country, a large hip- hop scene built on, which had a strong influence on the Gambian hip-hop.

In 1999, the local television Gambia Radio & Television Services was awarded the first Gambian Rap Awards. The first winning crew of the Best Awards Act was because Fugitivz which had rapping in Wolof. By winning the award, the band became known in other countries and entered among other things later on at Popkomm.
