Gamou

Region

Gamou is a rural municipality in the Department Gouré in Niger.

Geography

Gamou lies in the Sahel. The neighboring municipalities are Alakoss the northwest, trowel in the east, the south and Gouré Moa in the southwest. The municipality is divided into 28 administrative villages and six hamlets. The main town of the rural community is Birni Kazoe consisting of the administrative villages Kazoe I, II and Kazoe Kazoe III.

The Forêt de classée Kaigam is a 287 acre protected nature woodland area in the municipality of Gamou. The protected status was made in 1942.

History

End of the 19th century belonged to the sultanate of Zinder Gamou, but could erstreiten a relative independence from the larger neighboring towns Gouré and trowel under his 1891 deceased ruler Daoudou. Under French rule at the beginning of the 20th century Gamou formed a separate canton, which nevertheless remained with regard to its resolution of several attempts. From the Canton Gamou showed the rural community Gamou as part of a nationwide administrative reform in 2002.

Population

At the 2001 census Gamou had 13,715 inhabitants. For the year 2010 18.624 inhabitants were calculated. In Gamou the ethnic groups of Hausa, Fulani, Tuareg and Tubu live. The Fulbe and coming from the north Tuareg operate transhumant livestock.

Economy and infrastructure

In the capital Birni Kazoe there is a significant particularly for trade in Zinder and Nigeria cattle market. There is a local citizen radio (radio communautaire) in the main town.
