Garbe Lahmeyer & Co. (before 1938: DEW - German electricity works to Aachen ) is a former electrical engineering company based in Aachen.

History and products

The company was founded in 1886 under the technical leadership of Wilhelm Lahmeyer in Aachen as German electricity works to Aachen, Garbe Lahmeyer & Co.. It was initially a limited partnership; only in 1899 it was renamed to the corporation. In 1890 Wilhelm Lahmeyer again left the company and founded in Frankfurt / Main, the Wilhelm Lahmeyer & Co. KG. But his name remained in the company of his resignation also. As of 1938, the company briefly Garbe, Lahmeyer & Co. Ltd. said.

The first product of Garbe - Lahmeyer was a newly developed by Lahmeyer type of self-regulating arc lamps. A short time later, a new type of electric motor ( see picture ) that is set quickly established itself as the standard in the market. Over the years, the portfolio has been continuously expanded and a variety of electrical devices and machines were made ​​: Electric motors of all kinds, dynamos (generators), alternators and starters for car motors, inverter machines, inverter welding power sources, to hydraulic systems and electrical home appliances.

In 1973 CGEE Alsthom, the company, after it ran into financial difficulties due to a delay in delivery for silicon metals.

Beginning of the 1990s, all operating areas (hydraulics, power transmission, Power Electronics, Home Appliances / Vacuum Cleaners, ...) have been outsourced and sold off into independent companies. To 1993, Garbe - Lahmeyer its own production. Today there is a formal legal successor only the pure holding company, GL AG in Hamburg.
