García de Loaysa

Juan García Loaysa y Mendoza ( * 1478 in Talavera de la Reina in Toledo, † April 22, 1546 in Madrid) was a Spanish politician, religious priest, bishop, archbishop, cardinal of the Catholic Church and Father General of the Dominican Order.

Life

The son of Pedro de Loaysa and Catalina de Mendoza, of noble parents, resigned in November 1496 in the convent of San Esteban in Salamanca one of the Dominican Order. After a health weakness, he studied in the convent of Santo Tomás in Ávila, and then went to Valladolid at the Colegio de San Gregorio. He is a lecturer and receives the office of rector. In 1518 he is elected in Rome for the General of the Order of the Dominicans in 1516 after he had assumed the office of the Spanish province of Upper. 1522 he is the confessor of Emperor Charles V.. In June 1524 he received the office of the Bishop of Osma. On August 4, 1524 he was appointed President of the India Council ( Consejo Supremo de las Indias Real y ). When he was appointed in 1526 the State Council, he reached another high point of his career. 1530 awarded him a cardinal in Rome with the titular church of Santa Susanna. In 1532 he became the bishop of Siguenza and finally in 1539 the Archbishop of Seville. At the same time his sole regency was conferred on the Spanish colonial empire in the New World during the Emperor's absence. In 1546 he was appointed Grand Inquisitor of Spain. In the same year he died 68 years old in Madrid. His body was brought to his hometown of Talavera de la Reina, where he is buried in the church of Santo Domingo y San Ginés established by him of the Dominican monastery. Its crafted from alabaster tomb is there still be seen today.
