Gareth Roberts (footballer)

Gareth Wyn Roberts ( born February 6, 1978 in Wrexham ) is a Welsh footballer who has a contract with the English third division Notts County since 2014. Between 2000 and 2005 he played ten matches for the Welsh national team.

Career

Tranmere Rovers

Originally from the youth academy of FC Liverpool Gareth Roberts joined in January 1999, trained by Ronnie Whelan Greek first division club Panionios Athens and played fifteen league games and two games in the European Cup Winners 1998/99, before on 13 August 1999 on loan to the English second division Tranmere Rovers moved. After a promising debut in Birkenhead, the club signed him on 8 November 1999 on a firm contractual basis. In the League Cup 1999/2000 Roberts moved with his team surprisingly into final, lost this game but before 74 313 spectators at Wembley 1-2 against Leicester City. 2000/ 01 the club was relegated as Table from the third league. In the Football League One 2004/ 05 Tranmere reached in third place play- offs, but failed prematurely at Hartlepool United.

Doncaster Rovers

On 19 May 2006 Gareth Roberts moved to league rivals Doncaster Rovers. In his first season he won the Football League Trophy with Doncaster through 3-2 after extra time in the final against Bristol Rovers. Roberts was not used in this game by coach Sean O'Driscoll. In the Football League One 2007 /08, the club moved in third place in the play-offs and reached a Erstrundenerfolg over Southend United in the final. 75 132 spectators in Wembley beat Doncaster 1-0 Leeds United, reaching promotion to the Football League Championship. After relegation in the seasons 2008/ 09 and 2009/10, Roberts ruled against a contract extension in Doncaster and left after four years of the club.

Derby County

On 13 May 2010, the second division Derby County announced the signing of Gareth Roberts. In the following two seasons, the left-back established in his new team and signed a new one-year contract in April 2012.

Bury FC and Notts County

After a temporary change to the fourth division FC Bury, Roberts signed on 31 January 2014, a contract until the end of the season at third division Notts County.
