Garip

Garip ( Turkish for strange or alien ) was a Turkish poet group. Alternatively, this flow was also called the First New ( Yeni Turkish Birinci ).

It consisted of Orhan Veli, Oktay Rifat and Melih Cevdet, who were friends since their high school days. This Orhan Veli was the most famous member of the group. After his death in 1950, the two remaining friends developed their style individually on and also began to write novels and plays. The poems of the group were published in several literary journals, especially in " Varlik " (existence).

The name Garip expresses a break with the traditional, perceived as decadent style elements of Ottoman Turkish poetry. Stylistically, Orhan Veli's poems are characterized by the inclusion of vernacular as well as surrealistic elements. With this, a socially critical approach is expressed.

An example is the poem " bedava " ( " Free" ) by Orhan Veli:

Bedava yaşıyoruz, bedava; Hava bulut bedava, bedava; Dere tepe bedava; Yağmur çamur bedava; Otomobillerin Disi Sinamaların Kapisi, Camekânlar bedava; Peynir ekmek Degil ama Acı su bedava; Kelle fiyatına hürriyet, Esirlik bedava; Bedava yaşıyoruz, bedava.

Free we live, for free. The air is free, cloud free, Mountain and valley free, Rain and mud free. Cars from the outside, The doors of the cinema, Showcase are free. Bread and cheese does not, But stale water is free; The freedom cost the head, Slavery is free; Free we live, for free.

As opposition movement was founded in 1956, the literary movement Second New.
