Gas turbine locomotive

Gas turbine locomotives are locomotives of the railway, the use as the main drive a gas turbine.

History

The idea of the gas turbine locomotive came from Switzerland, where in 1938 was built with the SBB On 4/6 a first vehicle for experimental purposes. In contrast to the diesel locomotive in gas turbine engines, the combustion of cheap heavy oil was possible, which occurred at that time in the oil refineries as a waste product. The relatively low power to weight ratio of the gas turbine also promised the construction of very strong locomotives that would be superior to oil-fired steam locomotives in performance and economy.

In the late 1960s, the cost of bunker oil C thanks to improved technologies increased in the refineries, the operation of gas turbine locomotives became uneconomical. A further development of the vehicles under therefore remained.
