Gasherbrum V
The west side of the Gasherbrum group of the Baltoro Glacier
Gasherbrum V is a 7147m high mountain in the Gasherbrum group in the Karakoram. He was never yet climbed. Located just south of Gasherbrum IV and overhangs the upper Baltorogletscher.
Name
While the four highest Gasherbrum peaks were called since the 19th century with the name and number, was the Gasherbrum V ( like its neighbor G VI) merely as a " summit in south ridge of Gasherbrum IV." The Swiss Professor of Geology and Himalaya expert Günter Oskar Dyhrenfurth recommended to provide these independent mountain with a name and hit following its International Himalaya Expedition 1934, the name Gasherbrum V before, which finally prevailed
In addition to summit
Between Gasherbrum V and IV is a secondary summit of Gasherbrum V, which is called Gasherbrum V Northwestern, in some maps as Gasherbrum VII. The name of this summit no longer goes back to Dyhrenfurth.
