Gaspar de Lemos

Gaspar de Lemos was a Portuguese navigator and explorer.

After taking possession of Brazil by Pedro Álvares Cabral for the Portuguese crown on April 21, 1500 Gaspar de Lemos was given command of the ship, which should bring the news on May 2, 1500 method, after Lisbon.

On his journey he has as log entries show on 5 May 1500 discovered the then unknown third largest bay in the world, the largest in the southern hemisphere and left in her driveway a stone, as was common at that time among the Portuguese in discoveries. He stayed five days in the bay before he embarked on the way back to Portugal. It was not until over a year later, on November 1, 1501, he came back as one of the captains with Amerigo Vespucci, who was then considered as the official discoverer. Vespucci gave the bay the name of the day of the discovery: " All Saints " (Portuguese: Bahia de Todos os Santos). On its coast is today the city of Salvador (São Salvador da Baía de Todos os Santos), the first capital of Brazil.

On January 1, 1502 Gaspar de Lemos discovered about 1500 km south of the Guanabara Bay, which he mistook for a river mouth. Therefore he named this "river" Rio de Janeiro ( Portuguese for River of January ').
