Gasteria

Gasteria batesiana

The Gasteria, Germanized they are also called Gasterias, are a genus of the subfamily Asphodelus ( Asphodeloideae ). The genus includes about 22 species. Their natural distribution is restricted to the southern and western part of the Republic of South Africa with a type that extends into the border regions of Namibia ( Gasteria pillansii ).

Some Gasteria species are suitable as indoor plants for sunny windows or conservatories. Like all other succulents, they have like it to be moderate watering warm and bright and should. The main growth period is in Europe in the winter there, they then need the hellstmöglichen location ( south window ), not to etiolate.

Description

Gasterias are evergreen succulent plants. All species grow in two rows in youth, in old age, about half of the species change to rosettenförmigem growth. Most species form close to the mother plant from many offshoots ( Kindel ). Solitary Gasterias are rare, usually they form dense cushions. The simple, succulent leaves usually have a horny edge, but is never reinforced. The leaf surface is dark green with bands of white dots.

Gasterias form lateral or terminal, sometimes branched, loose inflorescences, usually they are grapey. The hermaphrodite, zygomorphic flowers are triple. The bloom are yellowish to red or yellow, and often have green tips. The bloom are fused Roehrig, but they are not two-lipped, this is a key differentiator to Haworthia species. The flower tube is bent and bulbous expanded, this is the key differentiator to Aloe species (hence the botanical name: Greek gaster for abdomen). Are formed capsule fruits.

System

The genus Gasteria in 1809 by Henri Auguste Duval Pl Succ. Horto Alencon. , 6 first described. A typical heterosexual synonym is Ptyas Salisb.

Species

The South African Gasteria specialist Ernst van Jaarsveld from the botanical gardens at Kirstenbosch and author of Gasteria - standard work Gasterias of South Africa, A new revision of a major succulent group ( Fernwood Press, Vlaeberg 1994 ) decreased the over 100 Gasteria name drastically and showed that many common names such as Gasteria caespitosa, Gasteria maculata, Gasteria marmorata, Gasteria minima or Gasteria prolifera are only Standortvarietäten, incorrect descriptions or cultural hybrids.

The genus Gasteria is divided into two sections, each with two series and include the following types:
