Gastr del Sol

Gastr del Sol was a band from Chicago ( USA), which consisted most of the period of existence of the two members of David Grubbs and Jim O'Rourke. Between 1993 and 1998, they released seven albums, the style of post-rock ( which they had to bring in the first place in conjunction ) to musique concrète ranged.

History

David Grubbs, a former band member of Squirrel Bait and Bastro, Gastr del Sol, founded in 1991. Their first album, The Serpentine Similar, appeared in 1993. The initial constellation of the band was briefly extended by the bass guitarist and the drummer of Bastro, Bundy K Brown and John McEntire. , in 1994, the band already left again, to join the band Tortoise. In the same year joined Jim O'Rourke to Gastr del Sol. The band has now borne mainly by Grubbs and O'Rourke which they expanded by constantly changing guest musicians. John McEntire also continued to work with several shots, even though he was not an official member of the band more.

Most of the publications published by Drag City Records, beginning with the album Crookt, cracks, or Fly in 1994. From Work From Smoke, the central piece on this album, stir well Grubbs and O'Rourke's penchant for bass clarinets accompanied by atonal guitar sounds and Grubbs increasingly surreal lyrics here.

On the album released in 1996, Upgrade & Afterlife O'Rourke and Grubbs vary their musical approaches in other directions. His chord patterns, melodic sequences, and the use of the flugelhorn already let O'Rourke's later musical development towards Future guess pop. By participating in the work on this album was Markus Popp, a member of the Clicks & Cuts Oval project, through which the album got its electronic influences.

After the release of Camoufleur Gastr del Sol dissolved. Grubbs and O'Rourke continued to release albums under her own name in the fields of rock, pop and experimental music.
