Gäu Plateaus

The Neckar and Taubergäuplatten (also: Gäuplatten in the Neckar and Tauber country ) represent the largest area of ​​natural spatial feature unit group of Baden-Württemberg, is sufficient, however, in small parts in the northeast ( Rothenburg ob der Tauber ), even down to the Bavarian Middle Franconia. The single main units of this large landscape here have considerable climatic and edaphic differences. Together these main units, the construction of flachkuppigen hills of the Muschelkalk, flat wave Lössgebieten and plateau-like landscapes where the limestone layers of sediments of gypsum Keuper and Latvians are covered.

The Neckar and Taubergäuplatten lie to the west of the Southwest German cuesta land. You are naturally spatially closely related to the northeast adjacent Mainfränkisches plates (13).

Location and Geology

The Neckar and Taubergäuplatten extending from the Upper Rhine to the Tauber Valley. To the west it is bounded by the Black Forest and the Upper Rhine Plain, north of the Odenwald and the Mainfränkisches plates, east of the Franconian and Swabian Keuper- Lias - country as well as the Swabian Alb.

The bedrock form the layer packets of the Muschelkalk, which are mostly covered by Lettenkeuper or loess. The soils in the area of ​​Gäuplatten are for the most part very good.

Designation

The term " district " or the Alemannic " Gaeu " was originally applied to water-rich, forest-free floodplains. Today we labeled " Gäulandschaften " especially the sparsely wooded country of the Swabian- Franconian terraces escarpment country and thus connects the landscapes of open, fertile agricultural areas.

The name Neckar and Tauber- Gäuplatten is seen here as a collective term for the Gäulandschaften located in the catchment area of the Neckar river and its tributaries and the rich in the North East to the catchment area of ​​the Tauber.
