Gave (placename element)

Under Gave refers to the generic name for a water course in the French Pyrenees, especially in the old province of Béarn and Bigorre, which are today held in the department of Pyrénées- Atlantiques and Hautes -Pyrenees. They all belong to the river system of the Adour.

The ancient name Gave rooted in pre- Celtic times and has its precipitation found in the Occitan or Gascon language. In the last century, this type of river name was the focus again on the old traditions very popular, the old names were again in use and are replacing the previously used or to be used as an alternative name for this.

In applying the designations, the term Gave is the name of a city or a valley, from which comes the river, adds.

Example

  • Gave d' Oloron means: The river, which comes from the town of Oloron.

The problem with this type of flow designation is that a river in its course from the source can repeatedly change to the mouth of his term, when other places or valleys are relevant to specific sections of the river.

Example

  • The watercourse Gave de Brousset - Gave d' Ossau - Gave d' Oloron changes twice its name, but will be described in accordance with www.sandre.fr as a uniform flow under the name of Gave d' Oloron.
