Gaya (Hindi: गया, Gayā ) is a city in the northern Indian state of Bihar, with 460,000 inhabitants ( 2011 census ). It is the administrative seat of the district of the same name.

The city is located 100 kilometers south of Patna, the capital of Bihar, and is an important city for Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims. It has an airport.

About 15 kilometers from Gaya Bodhgaya is where Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment. In Gaya the Buddha taught monks in 1000 the fire Sutta ( Sutta Adittapariyaya, S.35.28 in the Pali canon ).
