The glacier Geitlandsjökull is a side glacier of the great glacier shield Langjökull in the west of Iceland. It reaches an altitude of 1,400 m.

Location

The small glacier sign tops a panel volcano and is located in the southwestern corner of the Langjökull. To the west of it and the upstream central volcano Prestahnúkur is the highland road Kaldidalur. The glacier is located in the municipality of Borgarbyggð and Grímsnes above Grafningur.

Name and reference

Historically, the name refers to two glaciers, which were named after one located there in the late Middle Ages yard Geitland. Sources from the 14th century indicate.

One of the two then coalesced glaciers is now separated from the Langjökull and bears the name Þórisjökull. From the latter the Geitlandsjökull separates the valley Þórisdalur.

Volcanism

The glacier volcano Geitlandsjökull belongs to the Western zone of active volcanism in Iceland together with the larger Glacial Shield Langjökull on which he depends. He is a West Langjökullvulkansystem that is assigned to the central volcano Prestahnúkur. This borders on the west by the Geitlandsjökull. Columns of the volcanic system extend below its ice cap.
