Gela Painter

The Gela Painter was a painter with a long career that began at the end of the 6th and early 5th century BC to AD. Much of his work, which consists mainly of lekythoi were exported to western Greece. His works are very much influenced by the new currents, especially the red-figure vase painting. His painting style is often fleeting, but witness his pictures of originality. Especially with myths and genre scenes he can afford considerable. Many of his pictorial compositions on small vases are similar to those of larger, more expensive vases. The shoulder ornaments of the Gela Painter the usual outer buds were replaced by leaves.
