The Yellow Mountain, also called the Yellow guarantees, is a 628.4 m above sea level. NN high hill of the Hahnenkamm, a spur of the Franconian Alb, at Dittenheim in the district of White Castle -Gunzenhausen, Bavaria ( Germany ).

Geographical location

The Yellow Mountain rises in the nature park Altmuhltal on the northern flank of the Hahnenkamm 2.7 km southwest of the standing in the nucleus of Dittenheim village church and 1.8 km south-east of that of the district Sammenheim.

Geology and landscape shape

The built up of rocks of the Jura Yellow Mountain rises steeply to a glacial valley and consists of two superimposed, nearly flat plateau with almost triangular base. To the west, north and south the slopes drop abruptly from steep, only in the southwest is a flat, narrow connection to the foothills of the Hahnenkamm.

History

General

Strategically located plateau of the Yellow Mountain served the people in various periods as a fortified settlement site. It was fixed in the urnfield time from the 10th to the 8th century BC and in the late Hallstatt period in the 6th century BC by walls. In the 4th century, the plateau was extended to a height of Germanic settlement with powerful, up to 13 meters wide walls. The Yellow Mountain by archaeological excavations in the years 1908-1911 and 1926, the rich finds from various eras became known services. The majority of the finds dating back to the 4th and 5th centuries, only a few are younger.

In 1951, after the lifting of the flight ban by the victorious Allied powers of the flyer club Yellow guarantees in 1958 on the site of the later built barracks in Heidenheim, only a few kilometers away, moved. Today, the club is based at the airfield Gunzenhausen Reutberg.

Name Kund Royal

In general, the Mountain Yellow Mountain is known to historians and archeologists argue against more of the Yellow Bürg. The name Yellow Mountain could have come from the color of the iron sandstone of the mountain massif of a striking reddish in some places but also has yellowish color. Historical evidence can not be this but naming.

The part of the name, type could be a form of old male personal name Gebo and thus mean the castle of the Gebo. The name Yellow Castle can thus also be a further development of this name.

Reserves

The Yellow Mountain is located in the extreme western part of the Fauna- Flora-Habitat area " escarpment of the southern Franconian Alb " ( FFH-Nr. 6833-371 ) and also belongs to the western part of the founded in 1995 and 3141.36 km ² large nature preserve LSG within the nature park Altmühltal ( LSG-Nr. 329151 ).
