Gene Taylor (Bassist)

Gene Taylor ( born March 19, 1929 in Toledo ( Ohio) as Calvin Eugene Taylor, † December 22, 2001 in Sarasota, Florida) was an American jazz bassist of the hard bop, but also playing New Orleans blues.

Life

Gene Taylor started on the sousaphone, plays piano short time and then turned to the bass. Most Taylor will remain as a member of the quintet of Horace Silver in memory, where he worked from 1958 to 1962. With Silver 1962 he visited Europe. From 1964 he worked at Blue Mitchell and toured with his quintet in 1965 by Japan. He also played freelance ( freelance ) with Thelonious Monk, Howard McGhee, Duke Pearson, Junior Cook. In the late 1960s he worked with Coleman Hawkins, with whom he recorded one of his last albums, and Eddie Jefferson. In 1975, he took on yet with Barry Harris.
