General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans

GEBCO (General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans ) is a publicly available bathymetric data set. It detects the depths of the oceans around the world.

Organization

The GEBCO is an international organization with the aim to create a map with sea water depths and geographical names. Involved are the most countries in the world, represented by leading oceanographers. The organization is under the auspices of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission ( IOC) of UNESCO and the International Hydrographic Organization ( IHO ).

Record

The data set is based on data collected from marine echo sounders. Thus, it is very accurate for frequently traveled by sea. The topography was supplemented using satellite measurements. Up to a resolution of 1 arc minute he's free, finer resolutions are limited availability.

The data set is available as a digital grid and is therefore directly editable with Generic Mapping Tools.

Cooperation with OpenSeaMap

Water depths between 100 and 10,000 meters represented by a 23- point blue scale, with shading of slopes: In a cooperation between GEBCO and OpenSeaMap the GEBCO_08 record is shown. At high zoom levels additionally contour lines are shown.
