General classification in the Giro d'Italia

Maglia Rosa (Italian, pink jersey ') is the name for the rating leader's jersey of the overall classification at the Giro d' Italia. It is sponsored by the newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, the first organizer of the race and handed over to the leader of the general individual classification of each stage. The color of the paper on which was printed was the Gazzetta, pink for promotional purposes since January 2, 1898. In 1931, the maglia rosa introduced in the characteristic color of the Gazzetta. The first carrier was Learco Guerra, who won the opening stage of the 19th Giro d' Italia from Milan to Mantua.

The longest time spent in the Maglia Rosa until now Eddy Merckx with a total of 77 days. As far most successful German Jens Heppner wore the jersey for 10 days.
