General Public

General Public was a British music group. It was founded by Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger, who were formerly with The English Beat.

Other band members were keyboardist Mickey Billingham at the beginning ( Dexy 's Midnight Runners ), bassist Horace Panter ( The Specials ) and drummer Stoker ( Dexys Midnight Runners / The Bureau).

After a recording contract with I.R.S. Records was signed, appeared in 1984 with the support of Mick Jones, the guitarist of The Clash, the debut album All the Rage. The single Tenderness from the album came up in the top 40 of the U.S. charts and became a commercial success. Shortly after the shooting Kevin White took the place of guitarist and sixth member of the band.

Before the recording of the second album the band split by White and Stoker. They were replaced by brothers Gianni and Mario Minardi. Hand to Mouth, however, was far less successful than the band's debut. Only the singles Too Much or Nothing and Come Again knew to convince halfway. A short time later they separated.

In 1994 there was a reunion of Roger and Wakeling, as you recorded for the soundtrack to Lonely Zweisam Dreisamstadion I'll Take You There by The Staple Singers. The song was released under the name General Public. It was decided to issue a new album and was released in 1995 Rub It Better. However, the sales figures were disastrous and the project was finally abandoned.
