Generative Design

Generative design refers to a design method in the different fields of design (art, architecture, communication design, product design, ...). What is essential is that the output - image, sound, architectural model, entertainment, ... - by a set of rules or an algorithm ( usually in the form of a computer program ) is generated.

Unlike long been established terms such as generative art or computer art Generative design includes in particular tasks of design and architecture. Main applications in the field of communication design is the creation of information graphics, diagrams or flexible appearances. In architecture, Generative design is ( there also often called Computational Design ) is mainly used for form finding and simulation of architectural structures.

That Generative design in importance increases, their ideas is mainly because that new development environments ( Processing, VVVV, Quartz Composer, Open Frameworks, ...) or scripting capabilities ( Rhino scripting, Scriptographer, ...) make it now also designers with little programming experience comparatively easy to implement this area.
