The Gennargentu ( Monti del Gennargentu ) is the highest mountain in Sardinia and is therefore referred to as the "roof".
Location
The irregular ridge located on the territory of the municipalities Fonni, Desulo, Aritzo, Arzana and Villa Grande and reaches its climax in a vast semicircle of several 1800 m high summit. The highest is Punta La Marmora with a height of 1834 m.
Geology
The Gennargentu consists mainly of shale formations, which give the landscape an undulating aspect and rise from the numerous porphyry veins.
Origin of the name
The name refers to the silver deposits of the area ( genna = Pass, Argentu = silver).
