Gentoo (file manager)

Gentoo is a freely licensed under the GPL file manager for Linux and Unix systems.

It was programmed in 1998 by Emil Brink in ANSI C and is based on the GTK graphics library; the first published version ( 0.9.0 ) was released in September 1998. The design is the directory originally modeled with its two-column list view Opus for Amiga and reminiscent of Norton Commander for Microsoft Windows.

Gentoo has a powerful but "lean" GUI interface, which occupies a few memory and processor resources, so all the buttons are for example only labeled with text. The program is fully configurable through the GUI, the bottom button bar can with common command line tools such as tar for example, gzip or chmod occupied.

The file manager has with the Gentoo Linux distribution, only the name in common, both go back to the Gentoo Penguin, English: gentoo penguin.
