Geoffroy du Breuil

Geoffroy du Breuil, also called Geoffroy de Vigeois, (lat: Gaufredus or Galfredus, † 1184 ) was a French clergyman and chronicler of the 12th century.

Gottfried came from a gentry family of Limousin and joined the Order of the Benedictines at the Abbey of Saint -Martial of Limoges at. In 1170 he became a monk in the priory La Souterraine and 1178 he was elected prior of the monastery cell of Saint-Pierre Vigeois. He died in 1184 or shortly thereafter.

He wrote a the years 994-1184 comprehensive chronicle, in which he devoted himself to the first crusade and the regional history among others. Gottfried was the first chronicler of the term " Albigenses " ( hæreticos Albigenses ) used in an entry for the year 1181 for the community of faith of the Cathars, as he located the town of Albi as their place of origin.
