Geoffroy (also with J instead of G, -o or -e- instead - eo-, -i instead of -y ) is an old French, widespread especially in the Anglo -Norman name on Germanic Gaufrid ( name variant of Gautfrid, by Gaut " Goth " and frid " peace, protection " ) back. He was in Latin, among other things, as Galfredus, Galfridus ( probably under interpretation of the -u- in Gaufrid as vocalization of l ) and as God ( s) fridus ( under identification with Gotfrid, of Germanic goda "God" and frid ) latinized and adapted in English as Geoffrey.
