Geomyoidea

A gopher

Pocket rodents ( Geomyoidea ) is a term for two related families of rodents:

  • Pocket gophers ( Geomyidae )
  • Pocket mice ( Heteromyidae )

A common feature are two coat pockets on the sides of the head, where food can be transported. These bags can be put on for cleaning the outside. Externally, the two families have little in common: The gophers remember to structural, moles, pocket mice partly to mice and partially to gerbils. However, they are obviously so closely related that they are sometimes united in a joint family.

The extinct Eomyidae - of which the lubricious nature Eomys quercyi is best known, could belong to this group.
