Geonoma

Geonoma congesta subsp. osensis

Geonoma is a native to Central and South America Palm genus. The genus includes several ornamental plants.

Features

Geonoma is a very variable species. Most species are rather small. They grow singly or in groups. The palm trees are unarmed and monoecious getrenntgeschlechtig ( monoecious ) and repeatedly flowering. The trunk is very short and subterranean, or erect or creeping. If he is upright, he is always slim. He is enveloped by thin sheaths, is later released. He is mostly stock -like.

The leaves are pinnate and divided regularly or irregularly or are undivided and then bifid ( two-headed ). The inflorescences are individually and ährig, bifurcated or three-to fourfold rarely branched. The ovary is the only unicompartmental bloom.

The chromosome number is 2n = 28

Dissemination and locations

The area of the species ranges from Mexico south to Brazil and Bolivia. All representatives grow in the understory of the tropical rainforest. They come from the plains up to great heights before. They are among the highest occurring palms in South America, Geonoma weberbaueri was found in 3150 m above sea level.

System

( Arecaceae ) is Geonoma within the palm family belongs to the subfamily Arecoideae, Tribe Geonomateae. The genus is monophyletic. Phylogenetic relationships within the tribe are still unclear.
