Georg Büchmann

August Methuselah Georg Büchmann ( born January 4, 1822 in Berlin, † February 24, 1884 in Schöneberg ) was a German philologist.

Biography

Georg Büchmann visited Berlin in the Joachimsthalsche high school, studied from 1841 to 1844 theology, linguistics and archeology in Berlin and received his doctorate in 1845 in Erlangen. His doctoral thesis was The characteristic differences between the Germanic and Slavic tribes.

According to state teaching certificate in 1848 he was first a teacher at the French Gymnasium in Berlin, then three years in Brandenburg an der Havel, and finally from 1854 to 1877 language teachers at the vocational school in Berlin- Friedrich Werder.

Büchmann collected and arranged for decades German sayings and quotes, where he benefited from his knowledge of Greek, Latin and Hebrew, English, French, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Danish and Swedish. When he gave a lecture in 1864 at the Royal Theatre in Berlin on the subject of commonly held quotations, among his listeners was also the publisher Frederick Weidling. He encouraged Büchmann to expand his manuscript and to work for printing. In the same year appeared Büchmanns Winged words for the first time.

Georg Büchmann lived for many years in Schöneberg, Frobenstraße 1, Zietenstraße 20 (his last apartment ) and died at the Maison de Santé. His grave is located on the old St. Matthew's Cemetery in the Schöneberg Großgörschenstraße (Dept. K 70 /20). The grave inscription reads: ΣΚΙΑΣ ΟΝΑΡ ΑΝΘΡΩΠΟΙ ( Skias onar anthropoi - One shadow dream is the people ), according to Pindar ( Pythian Ode VIII): " Σκιᾶς ὄναρ ἄνθρωπος. " - One shadow dream is the man.

Büchmanns greatest work, the collection and publication of the German quote treasure was as Winged words. quote:

The book was so lively popular that a new edition every year was initially necessary. The success of the " Büchmann " brought it but even with that Georg Büchmann to the present day found numerous imitators. Among these titles, see how " Winged melodies " ( 1968), " wingless words " ( 1971) and " Gezügelte words " ( 1976).

This book, he stated the following a motto:

Since then Büchmann let his famous quotations appear, his name was used even a household word and to all the people who like to quote. His name appears in book titles such as " The Red Büchmann " or " The field-gray Büchmann ".

Known for the frequent use of quotations was Chancellor, Prince Bernhard von Bülow. This earned him the reputation of a "walking Büchmanns " one.

Büchmann had collected and explained a total of 1,900 entries. After his death, the work of his longtime collaborator Walter Robert - Tornow was continued, which added 730 new citations.

Meanwhile, there are two different editions of the updated Büchmann, one from the publisher Bassermann ( Bertelsmann publishing group ), the other from Ullstein Verlag ( publishing group Bonnier ); next give both publishers also a classic issue out.
