Georg Graf

Georg Graf ( born March 15, 1875 in Munzingen, † September 18, 1955 in Dillingen an der Donau ) was a German orientalist. He was a representative of the science of the Christian Orient.

Life and work

After studying at the Lyceum in Dillingen, he was ordained a priest in 1898. By 1930, he was primarily active in pastoral ministry. In 1905 he received his doctorate in Munich, Dr. phil. with a study of the Christian Arab literature. Through this work, his contact with the magazine al - Machriq originated, founded by Louis Cheikho. In the years 1910 and 1911 he lived in Jerusalem and studied Christian literature in monasteries, connected to a short stay in Beirut there.

In 1918, he earned a doctorate in theology at the University of Freiburg with a thesis on Marqus Ibn al - Qunbar ( An attempt at reform within the Coptic Church in the twelfth century ), which was published in 1923. Further research in Egypt, Syria and Palestine followed. In 1930 he was appointed Honorary Professor of Christian Oriental Literature at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Munich. In 1946 he was appointed to the Pontifical House prelates.

Total Count published over 270 books, articles and publications about the Christian Orient. He published a large number of hitherto unpublished Arabic works. He was a long time editor of the Arabic series of the Corpus Christianorum Scriptorum Orientalium and Oriens Christianus the magazine. His main work, the five-volume history of the Christian Arabic literature may apply ( Vatican City 1944-53 ).
