Georg Heinrich Thiessen

Georg Heinrich Thiessen ( born January 19, 1914 in Eddelak near Brunsbüttelkoog; † July 3, 1961 ) was a German astronomer.

Life

George Thiessen studied after graduating from physics and mathematics and a doctorate in 1940 at the Georg -August- University of Göttingen with Richard Becker. In 1943 he came to the Fraunhofer Institute of Reich Office for RF research to Freiburg im Breisgau, where he met Karl- Otto Kiepenheuer. In January 1945 he was transferred to the observatory in Hamburg -Bergedorf, where he was from 1946 to 1953 and then assistant Observer. In 1953 he completed his habilitation on the solar magnetic field.

On July 3, 1961 he was killed in a traffic accident. He thrust head-on with a tram. His wife was seriously injured in the accident.

The lunar crater Thiessen is named after him.
