Georg Hesler

George Hessler, also George Hessler, George Hessler, Georg von Hessler and Georg von Hasler ( * 1427 in Bamberg, † September 21, 1482 in Melk) was a cardinal and 1480-1482 Prince-Bishop in the Diocese of Passau.

He studied since about 1446 at the universities of Vienna, Leipzig, Cologne, Heidelberg and Pavia. There he became in 1454 a doctoral thesis Doctor iuris utriusque. To 1456 he was ordained priest.

1458-1460 Hessler was provost at Worms and at the latest 1460 Reverend Father in Cologne. In 1466 he was a canon in Speyer. Hessler worked for various spiritual and temporal lords and stood since 1460 in the service of Duke Albrecht VI. in Vienna.

After his death he became chancellor in 1463 the archbishop of Cologne Rupert of the Rhine, and later he served his successor Hermann IV of Hesse. 1474 appointed him Emperor Friedrich III. for his advice and then to the prothonotary. Active in diplomatic mission in Rome, he was also since 1476 notary and clerk of Pope Sixtus IV.

On December 10, 1477, he was appointed cardinal in 1480 was followed by the proposal of the emperor by Pope Sixtus his appointment as Bishop of Passau, although the chapter Friedrich Mauerkircher had chosen.

In connection with the violent occupation of the Bishopric of Passau they clashed with supporters of the counter- bishop Friedrich Mauerkircher. 1482 the Ilzstadt was fired from the fortress of the House of Lords and largely destroyed, failed an attack on the fortress.
