Georg Jensen

Georg Arthur Jensen ( born August 31, 1866 in Raadvad in Copenhagen, † September 2, 1935 ) was a Danish silversmith and artist whose silversmith helped shape the industrial design of the Scandinavian countries in a functional style. He was also founder of the renowned silver company Georg Jensen Sølvsmedie.

Life and work

During the years 1895-1901 Georg Jensen completed his studies in sculpture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and then worked in the studio of the Danish court jeweler Michelsen, where he made of tin and silver work in the workshop by Mogens Ballin. In 1904 he opened his own studio in Copenhagen, where he first produced work in the Art Nouveau style. Soon, originated from this studio his company Georg Jensen in 1924 he opened a store on Fifth Avenue in New York City.

According to Jensen's death in 1935 the son of Jørgen Jensen ( 1885-1966 ) took over the management of the company. He kept the basic setting of the company to also sell high quality silver work of other designers. Under these designers were, inter alia, Sigvard Bernadotte, Arne Jacobsen, Finn Juhl, Henning Koppel and Erik Magnussen. During the 1960s and 1970s, the company produced high quality sculptural jewelry and watches the designers Nanna Ditzel and Vivianna Bülow- strokes forth.

In 1973, the Georg Jensen trademark of Royal Copenhagen and was purchased in 1997, Georg Jensen Sølvsmedie a part of the Royal Scandinavian Group with the Danish and Swedish companies Royal Copenhagen, Bing & Grøndal, Holmegaard, Orrefors, Kosta Boda and Höganäs.
