Georg Nöbeling

Georg Nöbeling ( born November 12, 1907 in Lüdenscheid, † February 16, 2008 in Rosenheim, full name Georg August Nöbeling ) was a German mathematician.

Life and work

Born and raised in Lüdenscheid studied Nöbeling 1927 mathematics and physics at the University of Göttingen from 1929 at the University of Vienna. There he received his doctorate in 1931 with Karl Menger on a generalization of the embedding theorem, whose representation is known in three-dimensional space as a Menger sponge.

For Menger Nöbeling worked as a teaching assistant until 1933, where he worked in Menger's mathematical colloquium with Kurt Gödel, Franz Alt, Abraham Wald, Olga Taussky - Todd and others. In 1933 he became an assistant of Otto Haupt in Erlangen, after the Habilitation in 1935, he was appointed in 1940 as an associate and in 1942 a full professor at the University of Erlangen. His research focused on analysis, topology and geometry. In 1968/69 he solved the problem on abelian groups Speckersche.

As Dean (1950-1952) of the Faculty of Science, as Rector (1961-1963) and as Baureferent until his retirement in 1976, he was instrumental active in university self-government. He coined especially the planning of the Faculty of Engineering and the merger with the Nuremberg College to the University of Erlangen- Nuremberg.

In 1953 and 1955 he was chairman of the German Mathematical Society; from 1959 he was a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences. In 1965 he was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit.
