Georg Renatus Solta

Georg Solta Renatus ( born April 18, 1919 in Vienna, † 2 May 2005) was an Austrian linguist, Indo-Europeanist and university professor.

Life

Born in Vienna Georg Solta Renatus spent his school years in Linz. On 13 June 1934 he laid there on the grammar school leaving examination with distinction. In the fall of 1934 he began his studies at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Vienna. In addition to the comparative Indo-European linguistics, he also studied Classical Philology and Romance. He began on 1 July 1938 before his promotion, his university career as a librarian at the Institute of Indo-European Studies. From 1 July 1940, he moved to the function of a wizard.

For his further career Professors Paul Kretschmer, William Havers and Albin Lesky were of great importance. The topic of his dissertation was " old Italian place name studies ." On 20 July 1939 he was awarded a doctorate of philosophy. After Soltas own account was his Jewish teacher Norbert Jokl, who was murdered in June 1942, his most important role model. Jokl was one of the founders of Albanistik.

After a disease-related interruption Solta was able to continue his career in 1949 as a graduate assistant. Not even his habilitation in 1953 changed ( to the position of the Armenian within the Indo-European languages ​​) at first. Only in 1955 he became Assistant to the Indo-European Institute back in 1967 he was appointed associate professor, was appointed in 1973 as full professor of Indo-European Linguistics.

In 1984 he was elected corresponding member of the philosophical- historical class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Solta, whose essence was characterized according to the matching statements of his colleagues and students of the highest personal humility and integrity, died on 2 May 2005.
