Georg Sverdrup

Georg Sverdrup (* as Jørgen Sverdrup April 25, 1770, † 1850) was a Norwegian philologist, philosopher and politician.

Sverdrup received his university degree in Copenhagen in 1798. It was in 1805 at the same university professor of Greek, from 1813 in Oslo, where he was professor of philosophy from 1831 to 1841.

Sverdrup founded the first Norwegian University Library. The University of Oslo was founded in 1811, but was due to the Napoleonic wars, do not answer that already donated 50 000 volumes from Copenhagen. The library was built until 1828 and included at this time 90 000 volumes. Sverdrup was from 1813 to 1845 here librarian. The new university library, which was completed in 1999, now bears his name.

Sverdrup took Christiania (Oslo ) on the Imperial Assembly of Eidsvoll on May 17, 1814. He was the leading figure of the independence party. Sverdrup was a member of the Constitutional Committee and past president of the national assembly. He was a member of the Storting from 1818 to 1824 and again from 1824 to 1826.
